Meng Kee Fried Kway Teow

Meng Kee Fried Kway Teow

Guess who’s back? Back again. Undoubtedly, one of the best CKT you can get in Singapore. I daresay. This glistening plate of char kway teow from Meng Kee is life changing. The ultimate selling point of this dish is the charred flavor of the dark soy sauce on the noodles that licks the roof of ur mouth as you slurp on by. God damn?!?! I was already sold from the first spoonful. To add on, the soy sauce ain’t overpowering the other ingredients and didn’t take over the world — in the sense of the CKT. Which is much appreciated. Minor issues: Maybe Mr Meng Kee could litter the plate with a lil bit more pork lard or lap Cheong which in my opinion would enhance the overall experience of the dish. Even so, this is a beautiful execution of a proper CKT.

One Fattened Calf (one-north)

One Fattened Calf (one-north)

No longer fresh off the boat, One Fattened Calf has made their mark and established as one of the more popular burger joints in Singapore known for their extremely soft potato buns and mouthwatering juicy beef patties. I have tried this burger before during its humble inception days and I must say that the quality stayed consistently good. The potato buns are as pillowy as a baby’s bottom and the beef patty is grilled to perfection — some parts crispy while remaining juicy. One nitpick complain is that the sauce is slightly too sweet but that’s just my preference for the not sweeter side. The price has also seen some increase which deters me from making this joint a favorite. And that the double patty is a slight overkill (was being a glutton momentarily). Would still recommend this place despite its shortcomings.

Dan’s Steaks (Star Vista)

Dan’s Steaks (Star Vista)

Best dish on the table that night was the shoestring fries. That should speak volume to the quality of food served here. Albeit not being the worst tasting steak, a sous vide steak isn’t what you really want from a restaurant. You could probably save yourself a meal here, get a sous vide machine and have a steak night in the comfort of your own home. Mac and Cheese tasted like it wasn’t cooked enough and a little bit more char would’ve helped it. Nothing much to say about the pork chop. Decent but nothing memorable.

No. 18 Zion Road Fried Kway Teow

No. 18 Zion Road Fried Kway Teow

Not sure how to begin but this stall might either be overrated out there could be a change of cook which is reflected by the plate of CKT. There’s absolutely no flavor and you’re just eating soya sauce coated noodles. Even the cockles, lupcheong and lard do not add anything to the dish. A pity. It’s still an edible plate of CKT, don’t get me wrong. But it ain’t worth it to travel here for it.

Burrata Joy & Gustavo Lapasta

Burrata Joy & Gustavo Lapasta

As the name of the place goes and as Marie Kondo would’ve said it, their burrata truly gives me joy. The smoked burrata only adds a little bit of dimension to their already rich burrata, which in my opinion is optional. But go forth and try it young padawan. Don’t let me stop you. Crab in pink sauce is to be lauded for. For the first time, you can actually taste the crab in this. The burrata complements this dish perfectly. For the truffle mushroom on the other hand, the tastes are kinda mild and muted. Can give this a miss. Tiramisu is good in the sense of the coffee powder they used and the biscuits are infused into the whole dish. Through, it isn’t the best as I find the cocoa powder to be a little too much. And at times it might get you choking and coughing. Not stopping you if that’s what you’re into though.

Cat in the Hat

Cat in the Hat

Cat in the hat, diamond in the rough, gold in the dross—these are all synonymous idioms conveying roughly the same meaning. This is a gem of a pastry shop in the Golden Mile Food Centre. Priced affordably, their pastries are 100% delicious and always leave you wanting more. I particularly enjoy the yuzu tart, as it’s refreshing and zesty while staying light and delicious. The Basque cheesecake rivals those from even the most well-known and trending bakeries along Kreta Ayer Road if you know what I’m referring to lol.

Lao Zhong Zhong Eating House

Lao Zhong Zhong Eating House

Let me preface this with: I’m not a porridge person. Don’t exactly eat it for pleasure and this is me trying my best. This bowl of porridge was delicious but the grains were tiny that tastes like millet grains instead of rice. However, the consistency of the porridge is very gluey which made it enjoyable. The presence of the egg yolk as well just makes it a heartier meal.

Wangfu Dimsum

Wangfu Dimsum

Recently visited Wangfu’s Dim Sum, a place that’s been making waves with its rave reviews, particularly for its Sheng Jian bao. However, the food left much to be desired. The much lauded Sheng Jian bao was a letdown. The dough was disappointingly thick, which overwhelmed the delicate flavors and left the bao lacking in the expected juicy, flavorful broth. This made the Sheng Jian bao less enjoyable than anticipated. The noodle dishes were equally underwhelming. They were neither remarkable in flavor nor portion size, barely enough to satisfy a child’s appetite. The noodles themselves were bland, lacking the depth and richness you would expect from a good dim sum establishment. The only reason for its high ratings is because of the free Coke Zero on receiving 5 stars reviews from diners. You have been warned.

Rubicon Steak House

Rubicon Steak House

Look no further than Rubicon steakhouse for a warm and homely atmosphere. This charming spot serves up some of the most comforting Wagyu beef you’ll ever find. Each bite is perfectly seasoned (doubtful take — they do not allow me to request for salt) and juicy, making it a medium rare delight that practically melts in your mouth. I would recommend a side of rice as a sidekick to the fatty goodness of the steak to soak up all those savory juices to perfection. The mashed potatoes are a smashed hit as well, creamy and whipped just right. The bulb of garlic is a must, adding a warm, aromatic touch to your meal. Everything is seasoned so well that you won’t need any condiments. The service is as

TAI ER (Jewel Changi Airport)

TAI ER (Jewel Changi Airport)

Don’t know if Tai Er means too hungry? But it’s a missed opportunity by them not to call themselves the Kraut’s favourite. Alas, not everyone is punny like me and that’s acceptable. Onto the more important things, have been meaning to try this in a while and finally decided to battle the crowd for the Kraut. (Yikes). The Suan cai Yu was as pleasant and homely as a delightful grandma would be. The Sichuan peppercorns were not as aggressive and numbing to the point where it would have made the dish distasteful. Fish were fresh as it can get and every bite just gives you hope of actually finding Nemo. Kou shui ji deserves a slight mention as well because damn the sauce was rly accurate with their flavours. Though, the chicken could be steamed a tad bit shorter to not be overcooked and dry. The star of the show is definitely the rice. Originating from Wuchang, a city in Harbin, the rice was starchy and sticky and absorbs all the flavour from the Kou Shui Ji’s sauce as well as the sauerkraut fish soup. God damn. Well done.
