The cover of this is the movie depiction of it that stars Cillian Murphy, our resident Irishman. I read this book with an Irish accent in my head during all the dialogues which made it 100x more hilarious (I just find humour in their accent) and immersive. Think Connor McGregor going about his day being and angry schmuck. And the fact that they have to eat Fish and Chips every Friday like it’s an Irish tradition. Accurate environment building. But the plot of the story is more than that. Ultimately, it is about the prejudiced view / stigma towards kids or mothers who bear children out of wedlock. Consequently, these people are banished to the convent and are put to work in harsh and unsurvivable conditions where others do not question the humane aspect of it as they are all blinded by the fact that these humans are the product of a cardinal sin.
